Chili Mushroom gravy is one of the simplest and easy to make dish. Usually accompanied with Veg Fried rice or Noodles this can also be served with chapatis or plain rice.
I usually take the long way by preparing the batter with corn flour and wheat flour, dip the mushrooms in the batter and shallow fry them to get a nice flavour. However, you can also add the mushrooms straightaway and saute them along with onions, ginger and garlic.
Chili Mushroom can be made with or without bell pepper. I usually add it because of it’s flavour and aroma.
Lets jump straight to the step by step recipe.
Serves – 2 people
- 100 gms white button mushroom
- 1 medium sized onion
- 1 medium sized bell pepper
- 1-2 green chilli (chopped)
- 4-5 garlic cloves (finely chopped)
- 1 inch ginger (finely chopped)
- 4-5 tbs soy sauce
- 3-4 tbs vinegar
- black pepper
- 2-3 tbs corn flour mixed in water
- 2 tbs oil + more fro frying mushrooms
For the Batter:
- 4 tbs wheat flour
- 3 tbs corn flour
- salt and black pepper to taste
- Water to make a medium consistency batter
Cut the mushroom into quarter size and bell pepper and onion in square
Now mix wheat flour, corn flour, salt and black pepper with water and make a medium consistency batter.
Now heat oil in a wok for shallow frying. Dip each mushroom in the batter and coat uniformly. Now add them to the hot oil and fry until golden and crisp. Drain the mushrooms on paper towel to remove excess oil.
In another pan heat oil and add onions. Saute the onions for 1-2 minutes. Now add chopped garlic and ginger. Add green chillies. Now add bell pepper and saute for 3-4 minutes.
Add soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper and salt if required. Stir and mix the contents for a minute or two.
Now add mushrooms and stir in medium flame for 3-4 minutes.
Add water to the mixture and heat it up.
Now slowly add corn flour & water mixture to thicken the gravy. Keep stirring in order to avoid any lumps. When the gravy is thick enough remove from heat.
Add more corn flour water mixture to make an even more thick gravy. Check for seasonings and more sauce and vinegar can be added as per taste. I added a bit of red chilli powder to enhance the colour.
Chilli Mushroom gravy is ready to be served with veg fried rice, plain rice or noodles.
